Sustainability in University and College Sport - making our future the concern of the present

Sustainability does not only concern the environment around us, and the impact we have on it. In the business world, the concept involves management of the impact on people, profit and planet alike – a triple bottom line! Under the influence of these sustainability pressures, the university sports services mission has evolved from organising sports activities, to the much broader remit – the development of healthy campus life.

The Okanagan International Charter for Health Promoting Universities and Colleges (2015) suggests that: “Health promoting universities and colleges transform the health and sustainability of our current and future societies, strengthen communities and contribute to the well-being of people, places and the planet.”

Your sports service has a social, financial and environmental responsibility. You can contribute to sustainable development in education, research and operational management of your institution. You can support and stimulate sustainable behaviour among staff and students. And you can develop a sustainable work, study and sports environment in which the impact on our resources continuously decreases.

Dutch Cycle City in 2016, host of the world’s premier cycling conference Velo-City in 2017, and European Green Capital in2018, Nijmegen has an impressive track record of putting sustainability into practice, which makes it an ideal setting for our 21st ENAS Forum & Assembly. Through expert presentations and practical sessions, we will understand and address the challenges and opportunities of sustainability in the university and college sport context. Join us to become lean, mean and green in 2018.

Forum Sub Themes 2018
1. Fit for Life – On the meaning and impact of sustainability measures on daily life and physical activity including active transportation, design for activity and many more.

2. Sustainable Events – On legacy as the new sustainability measurement by showing best practices and engaging partners and key stakeholders.

3. Green Facilities – On trends, research and ideas for more sustainable facilities and equipment.

Pre-Forum optional event
Join us for the Pre-Forum facility visit from 11th to 13th of November 2018 and get introduced to the High Performance Centre Papendal, the largest elite sports training centre in the Netherlands, and the sports centres of both Wageningen University & Research and Radboud University. Get to know their philosophy and strategy, let them guide you around the facilities and learn about how they integrate sustainable entrepreneurship in daily practice.

“Become green, healthy and active!”
